Sport Australia’s lastest AusPlay data has revealed an overall increase in male participation in netball.
Captured from January 2019 to December 2019, the data shows approximately 88,600 males over the age of 15 (adults) participated in the sport at least once across the 12-month period. This equates to 11% of adult netball participants.
A total figure of 96,800 male participants equates to 9.6% of netball participants in Australia.
The following table shows data captured across the last four years, with a significant 24.6% increase from 2016 to the end of last year.
The growth largely aligns with increased participation rates across member states in their M-League and Junior M-League competitions and also the number of teams entering the Australian Championships.
Pertaining to 2016, 2017 and 2019 for the 0-14 age group, the data is found to have a “relative margin of error greater than 100%... (and) considered too unreliable to use.” This is in part due to a change in best-practise methodology used to collect the data.
